On-going collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service to assess long-term changes in soil carbon and water quality in the Walnut Creek watershed at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge.
Membership on the Mississippi River Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force Coordinating Committee representing ARS with the goal of reducing the size of the hypoxic zone in the Gulf to 5,000 square km by 2015.
Membership on the Agricultural Drainage Management Systems Taskforce with the goal of designing and quantifying the potential for drainage water management to reduce nitrate pollution of surface waters and increasing crop yields and assisting NRCS develop standards for implication of this practice. Also partner with the Agricultural Drainage Management Coalition, an industrial group with the same goals.
Agreements with local farmers, Brent Larson and Gerry Gourley, for conducting onsite research to reduce nutrient losses from corn/soybean fields.
Iowa Remote Sensing Validation Site with other partners from Iowa State University, University of Iowa, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (NRCS). NLAE’s role is soil water flow paths in the landscape.
Membership on the Executive Committee of the Midwest Cover Crop Council. Collaboration with Iowa State Extension, the Leopold Center, Iowa Learning Farms, Practical Farmers of Iowa, and NRCS on cover crop related issues, presentations, educational materials, and field demonstrations.
Partnering with the Fluid Fertilizer Foundation, the International Plant Nutrition Institute, and U.S. Borax Company to evaluate nutrient requirements and nutrient-use efficiency of bio-energy feedstock production systems (mainly corn).
Partnering with Iowa State University (Animal Science, NREM, and Agronomy), USDA-NRCS, Iowa DNR, and the Rathbun Land and Water Alliance to determine what effect cattle grazing management practices have on sediment and phosphorus losses from stream banks in the Rathbun Lake watershed in southwestern Iowa.
Partnering with Virginia Tech University and Georg August University in Gottingen, Germany, to investigate the use of mechanistic models for predicting nutrient uptake by various crop plant and tree species.
