Dr. Ray Anderson is an ecohydrologist working as a Research Hydrologist (Research Associate) in Water Management Research at USDA-ARS.  Before coming to ARS, Dr. Anderson worked at the University of California, Irvine and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.  At Irvine, he worked on measuring and modeling evapotranspiration in agricultural and wild lands, assessing regional climate impacts from land management, and portioning agricultural water consumption between precipitation, surface and ground water.  Dr. Anderson’s research methods integrate direct field measurements, micrometeorological techniques, satellite remote sensing, and climatic observations to research water use and productivity at field to regional scales.

Dr. Anderson’s current research interests at ARS include (1) water use, productivity, and sustainability of biofuels, (2) estimating water use and efficiency of orchard crops using field measurements and remote sensing, (3) development and refinement of new techniques to observe agricultural evapotranspiration and water use, and (4) integrating global and regional climate models with observational data to assess current and future water availability for irrigated agriculture.
