I am a support microbiologist in the Toxicology and Mycotoxin Research Unit, Richard B. Russell Research Center, Athens, GA. My interests include studying the nature of fungal and bacterial interactions in plants. The fungus of interest, Fusarium verticillioides, can live within plants as a symptomless infection referred to as an endophytic infection. The fungus and the toxins it produces adversely affect animal and human health, and lower the value of agricultural commodities. Studies are conducted on the ecological production and accumulation of Fusarium-specific toxins, and the reduction and prevention of these toxins in planta, primarily through biological control strategies using an endophytic bacterium, Bacillus mojavensis.
