Studied processes responsible for soil aggregate formation and stabilization; monitored changes in aggregate stability occurring with time and as a consequence of climatic differences, freeze-thaw cycles, water droplet kinetic energy, and tillage; developed techniques to minimize nitrate leaching through soil profiles while maximizing plant uptake of NO3-N; measured soil surface roughness and other soil physical properties as affected by rainfall, cultivation, and soybean canopy development; operated a hydraulically driven soil sampler, hand-operated recording-type soil penetrometer, Meyer and Harmon oscillating nozzle-type rainfall simulator, and an automated, non-contact microrelief meter; evaluated the effects of planting date, winter wheat presence, soybean row spacing, crop rotations, and tillage on plant extractable water in wheat-soybean double-cropping systems; developed a procedure to estimate plant extractable water in soil profiles; developed models to predict infiltration into reclaimed fly ash disposal areas; determined a soil erodibility factor for fly ash; studied techniques successfully used for coal ash stabilization; measured erosion from rainfall; determined single-storm rainfall factors; applied soil water balance theories to estimate infiltration into and percolation through a fly ash disposal area; measured NO3-N movement through a soil profile.

Vita

Gary is a soil scientist, with specialized training and expertise in soil physics.

He conducts and publishes personal and team research. Gary serves as lead scientist for some research projects and as a collaborator on others. He reviews research papers and proposals and serves as an Associate Editor on the editorial board of the journal Arid Land Research and Management.

He earned a Bachelor's and two Master's degrees (one in Environmental Pollution Control and one in Agronomy) from Penn State University in the late 1970's and a Ph.D. in Soil Physics from Mississippi State University in 1985. Throughout the past 20 years, Gary has been employed by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture at Kimberly as a soil scientist studying soil structure, water movement, and irrigation management.

Research

Current Interests

In his current personal and team research, Gary seeks 1) to increase sugarbeet seedling emergence by minimizing soil crusting and improving soil physical and hydraulic properties, 2) to utilize agricultural by-products, such as whey, manure, and compost, and irrigation management to increase crop production efficiency and improve soil properties, and 3) to characterize and control preferential transport of nutrients, such as N & P, and other solutes through soil, thereby protecting groundwater quality. Historically, much of Gary's research has focused on the processes and products responsible for soil aggregate formation, stabilization, and destruction in cultivated irrigated soils.

Gary is now studying 1) N & P release from soil aggregates fractured by freezing and thawing processes, 2) soil organic carbon effects on soil physical & hydraulic properties, 3) runoff water quality from fields that have received compost and manure, and 4) water movement and chemical transport through surfactant-treated wettable and non-wettable soils. In a collaborative investigation with University of Idaho researchers, Gary is studying the effects of organic farming production practices on soil structure and N management.
