Research Project:
QUALITY EVALUATION OF BERRY SELECTIONS AND VARIETIES
Location: Horticultural Crops Research
Project Number: 5358-21000-037-05
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 21, 2007
End Date: Sep 20, 2012
Objective:
1. Evaluate advanced breeding selection from Chad Finn’s breeding program (USDA/ARS/NCSFR) and variety trials for objective attributes related to processing or fresh market potential.
2. Process samples of advanced selections, selected field crosses, and standard varieties for display to and evaluation by breeders and the industry.
3. Include blueberries, black raspberries, and other berries grown around the region along with strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries as has been done in the past.
4. Prepare summary of all data in report format for use by breeders and industry members.
Approach:
Berries for this project will come mainly from plots at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center but may also come from other research fields in Corvallis or Washington or from grower fields. Selections and cultivars will be sampled throughout their harvest periods to track variations in fruit quality over time. New selections will be processed and analyzed from one to three times. Advanced selections will be sampled weekly. Formerly 5358-21000-036-23S (6/2008).
