Research Project: EVALUATION OF COMMERCIAL-SCALE DDGS-BASED PELLETED FISH DIETS

Location: North Central Agricultural Research Laboratory

Project Number: 5447-12620-003-02
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 01, 2010
End Date: Jun 30, 2013

Objective:
The aim of this collaborative project is to conduct and report research on the development of extruded diets formulated with ethanol coproducts (primarily DDGS) and nutritional supplements to minimize fish meal in feeds while maintaining commercially viable growth performance in cultured food fish.

Approach:
1) Processing of commercial-scale DDGS-based pelleted fish diets; physical and chemical characterization of these pelleted feeds. 2) Quantify commercial-scale DDGS-based pelleted fish diet effects on growth performance, efficiencies, nutrient utilization, survival, excretion, elimination, and retention when cultured food fishes (e.g., tilapia, yellow perch, or rainbow trout) are fed commercial-scale DDGS-based extruded diets. 3) Technology transfer of research results to animal producers, animal nutritionists, commodity groups, fuel ethanol manufacturers, and feed millers.
