Title: MULTI-LOCATION YIELD TRIALS OF RICE MUTANTS IN THE LATIN AMERICAN REGION

Technical Abstract: With the main objective of releasing new, improved, mutant varieties, 23 rice mutants, ten parent and a local cultivar were compared for yield, maturity, plant height and disease resistance in Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala and Uruguay. Data were collected from 31 yield trials with three replications at 14 locations over one to three years (1996 to 1999). Mutants and parent cultivars included were: one mutant each from from IRGA 408, Lemont, CR1113, CR1821, Precozicta, BR(IRGA)409 and Orion; three mutants each from EMPASC 101 and Oryzica-1; eight mutants from J104; and two doubled haploid mutants from Guatemala. Eight mutant lines were identified as potentially suitable for cultivation in cooperating countries. Desirable mutated characteristics to be transferred through crossing programs included earliness, salinity tolerance, blast resistance, resistance to shattering, translucent grain and milling yield, plant height and high yield potential.
