Technical Abstract: This chapter provides a taxonomic and phylogenetic description of species assigned to the yeast genus Eremothecium. The genus is unusual because some species are quite yeastlike, whereas others are non-budding and moldlike. Despite marked phenotypic differences among species, phylogenetic analysis of multigene sequences is consistent with the idea that all assigned species are members of a single genus. The five species assigned to Eremothecium are plant pathogens. Two of the species, E. ashbyi and E. gossypii, are used for the commercial production of riboflavin, vitamin B2. A diagnostic key to species is provided.
