Interpretive Summary: Accurate scientific names of plants are essential for communication about them thus a body of rules exists to govern what scientific name is the correct one. As scientific names of new plant species are published, list of these names are compiled in order to ensure that the names follow the rules. For example, the same name may not be used for two different species of plants. A comprehensive account of the plants of Brazil was published in 1873 but many of the scientific names were not included in the worldwide comprehensive list of plant names. As a result some plants were named twice and other names were used for more than one plant. In this study, the scientific names of plants of Brazil published in this document that were not included in the worldwide list are accounted for. This research will be used by those working to ensure that the scientific names of plants are accurate.

Technical Abstract: Joaquim de Almeida Pinto's Diccionario de botanica brasileira was published in 1873. The new scientific names in it have not appeared in the principal indices of phanerogamic scientific names. There are 13 new generic names and 318 new specific epithets in the book. Six of the specific epithets have later homonyms.
