Title: UPDATE ON A NEW BRUCELLOSIS VACCINE

Technical Abstract: A new vaccine for the prevention of brucellosis in cattle has been approved for use in calfhood vaccination programs. The new vaccine, B. abortus strain RB51 (RB51), is similar to B. abortus strain 19 in protection against abortion. However, vaccination with RB51 does not induce antibodies which cross-react and interfere with brucellosis surveillance testing. This allows vaccinated animals to be differentiated from naturally infected animals, a distinction currently not possible with strain 19. RB51 has been found to be safe in calves at six times the recommended dosage and has resulted in only one abortion from over 1500 pregnant cows vaccinated. This advance in brucellosis vaccine research should significantly aid brucellosis eradication efforts.
