JOURNAL OF HEREDITY. 2003. v. 94(5). p. 425-428 Interpretive Summary: Many coordinated steps are necessary in the sexual reproductive life cycle of the soybean plant. Any descriptions or alterations in this process can result in complete or partial seed failure. These descriptions or mutations can affect male development or female development or both and can be complete or partial. We have identified a complete male-sterile, female-sterile plant. Using traditional genetic techniques we were able to make cross-pollinations. Using molecular techniques, we have determined the genetic location of this male-sterile, female-sterile trait. The alternative form of the gene (fertility or normal seed production), can be incorporated into new cultivars. The location of this sterile trait will help plant breeders when producing cultivars.
Technical Abstract: Soybean male-sterile, female-sterile mutant genes have been identified by genetic and cytological studies. St8 has been identified as a desynaptic mutation resulting in male and female sterility. This mutant gene was derived from a gene-tagging study using the soybean w4-mutable line. In this report we identified the genetic map position of st8 via restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. St8 was located between RFLP marker E107 and SSR markers Satt132, Sct 065, and Satt414 on molecular linkage group J and linked to each by 7.8 cM and 3.4cM, respectively.
