Title: CONGENITAL SARCOCYSTOSIS IN A SAANEN GOAT

Interpretive Summary: Infection by protozoan (single celled) parasites of the genus Sarcocystis is widespread in livestock. Certain species of Sarcocystis cause abortion and neonatal deaths in cattle, sheep and pigs. Scientists at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center and Australian Department of Agriculture, Queensland, Australia report for the first time confirmed abortion due to Sarcocystis in a dairy goat. These findings will be of interest to veterinarians.

Technical Abstract: Sarcocystis schizonts were seen in histologic sections of the brain of a stillborn Saanen goat from Australia. The organism was located in endothelial cells of blood vessels, divided by endopolygeny, and reacted with anti-S. cruzi polyclonal rabbit serum in an avidin biotin peroxidase complex immunohistochemical test. This is confirmation of a report previously published by Mackie et al. (1992).
