Technical Abstract: The Germplasm Enhancement of Maize Project (GEM) involves maize scientists from industry, universities, and USDA-ARS in development of inbred lines from crosses of exotic and adapted germplasm. The enhancement protocol is for one of the 22 private cooperating companies to cross an exotic material by a proprietary inbred line to make a 50% exotic breeding cross. Another private cooperator will cross the 50% cross with their proprietary line of the same heterotic pattern to make a 25% exotic breedding cross. Breeding crosses were chosen for line advancement from yield testing of breeding cross testcrosses in 1996. In 1997, cooperative yield testing involved four experiments grown in six locations, evaluating more than 400 testcrossed 50% and 25% exotic S2 breeding lines. Some results are similar to the mean of the five commercial checks or better.
